Artist bio

Picture
"My work tells stories––haunting, surrealistic stories––that come from dreams and the unconscious. The characters in my artwork are often on the brink of some magical transformation, or encounter an animal or being from another world, or sense some invisible threat. They’re both vulnerable and strong, childlike and grown-up, playful and serious, frightened and powerful, mystical and ordinary––like all of us. My art making process is meditative, and meticulous. I love to create mysterious allegorical tales: they portray the vulnerabilities that underlie our lives and the strength we can call up when we face those hidden secrets."

Angelique Benicio is an award-winning painter, sculptor, film maker and performance installation artist. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally and across the Western United States for exhibitions at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in Novato, CA; The London Art Biennale in London, England; Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, CA; The Deyoung Open in San Francisco CA; The Sedona Arts Center in Sedona, AZ; The Brayer Gallery in Ventura, CA; Axis Gallery in Sacramento, CA; Trans-Art Gallery in Trondheim, Norway; and at the Casa Cor Annual Architectural Design Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her experimental short films have won numerous film festival awards. Her performance art has been shared with many non-profit art and community organizations, such as Arte & Vistsas, a performance art residency in Piedmont district , Italy; Art Works Downtown in San Rafael, CA; The Crucible in Oakland, CA; and Trails and Vistas in Truckee, California. She has hosted community maker events and performance art events at Autistry Studios in San Rafael, CA; Artworks Downtown in San Rafael, CA; and Allegory & Art in San Rafael, CA.
